Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS)
What Is PTNS?
Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS) is a non-surgical treatment used to manage symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB), including urinary urgency, frequency, urge incontinence, and nighttime urination (nocturia). PTNS involves stimulating a nerve near the ankle that connects to the nerves controlling bladder function.
This therapy is typically offered to patients who have not achieved satisfactory symptom control with lifestyle changes or medications, or who prefer a drug-free treatment option.
How Does PTNS Work?
PTNS works by sending mild electrical impulses through the tibial nerve, located near the inner ankle. This nerve communicates with the sacral plexus, which influences bladder and pelvic floor activity. By modulating these signals, PTNS can help restore more normal bladder function over time.
The procedure is performed in a clinic setting. A very thin needle electrode is inserted near the tibial nerve, and a small device delivers low-level stimulation during each session. The stimulation is not painful but may cause a mild tingling or pulsing sensation in the foot or lower leg.
What Can You Expect During Treatment?
Each PTNS session lasts about 30 minutes and is typically repeated once a week for 12 weeks. After the initial course, maintenance sessions may be recommended, depending on your symptom improvement.
There is no downtime following the treatment, and patients can resume normal activities immediately. No anaesthesia or hospital stay is required.
Who Is PTNS Suitable For?
PTNS may be an appropriate option for adults with:
- Overactive bladder symptoms
- Urge incontinence not well controlled with medications
- A desire to avoid long-term drug use or more invasive interventions
Suitability is assessed on an individual basis by Mr. Charles Han, who will consider your medical history, symptom severity, and prior treatments.
What Are the Benefits of PTNS?
Non-surgical and minimally invasive
- Does not involve medication or implants
- Can improve bladder control and reduce urinary urgency
- Performed in-office with no recovery time
Is PTNS the Right Option for You?
Mr. Charles Han will guide you through a personalised assessment and treatment plan. If PTNS is recommended, you’ll be fully informed about the expected process, timeline, and potential outcomes.
All treatments carry some risks, which will be discussed during your consultation. Individual results may vary.
