Rezūm™ Therapy
What Is Rezūm™ Therapy?
Rezūm™ Water Vapour Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in men. As the prostate grows, it can block the flow of urine through the urethra, leading to symptoms such as a weak urine stream, frequent urination (especially at night), incomplete bladder emptying, and urgency.
Rezūm uses controlled water vapour (steam) to safely reduce excess prostate tissue. The thermal energy from the steam causes the enlarged cells to die, allowing the body to absorb them naturally. Over time, this process opens the urinary channel and helps improve the flow of urine.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
Rezūm is typically performed in a day procedure setting. It does not require general anaesthesia and is usually done under local anaesthetic or light sedation. The procedure takes about 10–15 minutes, and a small instrument is inserted into the urethra to deliver short bursts of steam to targeted areas of the prostate.
A temporary catheter may be placed after the procedure and is usually removed within a few days. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few days, although it may take several weeks to notice improvements in urinary symptoms.
Who Might Benefit from Rezūm?
Rezūm may be suitable for men who:
- Have moderate to severe urinary symptoms due to BPH
- Prefer to avoid long-term medications
- Wish to preserve sexual and ejaculatory function
- Are seeking a minimally invasive alternative to surgery
It is generally recommended for men with prostates of a certain size, and individual suitability is determined based on a clinical assessment.
What Are the Potential Benefits?
- Minimally invasive and well-tolerated
- Outpatient procedure with quick recovery
- Does not require permanent implants
- Preserves erectile and ejaculatory function in most patients
- May reduce or eliminate the need for BPH medications
